Becoming an SQP

In the light of experience, particularly of all the phone calls we get from people who haven’t found what they’ve been looking for online, the website has been restructured slightly - what was the “New SQPs” page has been split into two: “Becoming an SQP” and “Exams and courses“.

I hope that the new “Becoming an SQP” page is clear in its quick summary and then more detail, but if you think it could be improved, leave a comment here to let us know.

Renewals

We have started to send out renewal notices - though don’t expect to complete the process until the end of next week. With the prospect of a postal strike looming, please do return them as soon as possible.

Tax relief for your AMTRA register fee

If you pay your AMTRA annual register fee yourself, you should be able to reduce your tax bill by getting tax relief on it as a professional fee you need to pay to get your job done. You can read more on the HMRC website.

If your employer pays your register fee on your behalf, they may be able to claim the cost against their trading profits.

Please note that AMTRA is not included in the list of approved organisations on HMRC’s website since the list was last updated in 2006, but AMTRA was added to the list of approved organisations by The Income Tax (Professional Fees) Order 2008.

If you have more queries, please contact HMRC or your tax advisor, since we cannot provide you with tax advice.

Joint vet/SQP CPD

‘Parasites in the Large and Small’, a RUMA initiative “CPD for all”, arranged by Shropshire Veterinary Association and sponsored by Fort Dodge Animal Health took place on 7 October 2009. This groundbreaking event was supported by BVA, AHDA, AMTRA and RPSGB and constitutes accredited CPD training for SQPs - attendance was worth 19 CPD points.

The venue was crammed to capacity - unfortunately some late registrants had to be turned away. Attendees heard from Professor Mike Taylor about sustainable worm control strategies in cattle, from David Bartram about new concepts for eradicating scab in sheep, and from Maggie Fisher on lice and mange in small animals.

AMTRA strongly supports this RUMA initiative which brought the two professions together for common learning and sharing of experiences in our quest towards the responsible use of medicines to improve animal health and welfare.

A reminder about your CPD points

CPD points earned are added to each SQP’s records when they are received from the CPD provider. SQPs will be advised of the number of CPD points they have accumulated to date on their annual renewal form in October 2009 (and each year thereafter).

Information on AMTRA-accredited CPD you have undertaken and which has been supplied to the AMTRA office by the CPD providers by 30 September has been included in the AMTRA database and is listed on the information included with each SQP’s personal renewal notice which will be sent out in October.

When you get it, if you believe that the information is wrong, please don’t telephone us, but instead send an email or a brief note in the post, citing your name and SQP Number, and explaining what you think is wrong – if an event is missing, please state what date it took place and who organised it.

Remember that only events that have been both accredited by AMTRA in advance and where AMTRA has awarded points to the event can be included on your official AMTRA register entry. If you are aware of events that aren’t being AMTRA-accredited which you feel should be (for instance, relevant Vet Nurse CPD or training run by medicine companies), do encourage the organisers to read the information for CPD organisers on the AMTRA website.

Half of all SQPs have recorded some CPD

Exactly 50% of all SQPs have now recorded some CPD points on the AMTRA database, and 6% have completed their minimum points requirement in the first CPD period. (Unfortunately a computer bug means that the information in the SQP newsletter on this subject is incorrect - we apologise for misleading readers, but nevertheless these facts are still great news.)

CPD update

The AMTRA CPD page has been updated to include information on how many points you need to get if you become an SQP part-way through the CPD period, or if you are absent on maternity leave or long-term sick leave.
